Radio Plugs

Recommended Posts

Hello, this is my first time posting on this form! I haven’t been on FTE or this form for a while, but I thought I’d start again. So ever since I have bought my 94 lightning I keep adding the features that I like from it to my 85 bronco. Right now I have the factory auto dim mirror, and soon to have duel sun visors. My next thing I would like to add is the factory94 premium sound radio set up. Supposedly online I was reading that 86-96 have the same radio plugs plugs. I was just wondering if this was true. My bronco is an 85, so I have to I will switch the plugs. I remember some post on FTE about someone putting a bricknose radio in their truck, but now I can’t find it.

FWIW, the 1980-86 radios are shaft mount and probably a one and one half DIN height. The 1992-96/7 radios are a side clip mount and are a one DIN height.

In order to use most aftermarket radios in a 1980-86 you need an adapter, for the 1992-96/7 the slide in mount most come with fits right in. Wiring, the 1980-86 models used pigtails on the radio with plugs that do not in any way match the newer system, for one thing, the 85 has a common ground speaker system, the 94 will have individual + and - leads. I have a set of the later radio plugs I cut form a harness for someone who them changed his mind if you need them.

I have the smaller radio adapter kit. Now I just have to figure out how to wire in the newer radio.

I actually have an 81, 84, 85, 86, 87, and 96 EVTM - although the 86 is in electronic format. But, I figured the best bet was to look at the 85 and the 96. So, I've now brought them in from the shop and will peruse them during the Cotton Bowl tonight. :nabble_smiley_wink:

And I have an '83 set of manuals if anyone needs anything.

Chris - The 1985 radios are the same as the 1986 radios, which are shown on pages 127 & 128 in the Electrical/EVTM/1986 EVTM/Radios. In addition, on Page 129 you can see the page number and even which figure in which you can find an illustration showing each connector.

And the 1996 radios are shown below.

Oddly enough, both of these are from Bill's EVTM's. The 1986 is his, and the '96 I took pics of is his. And I took pics from his because my brand new 1996 EVTM is WRONG! It is probably a Chinese clone and "hinges" on the top instead of the side, has the wrong stuff in the right place, and leaves a lot out. It is going back. :nabble_smiley_cry:
