Diesel Truck on CL

Recommended Posts

Seems a bit high for a 2wd, especially given the damage on the front left corner. 1984 model year should be past the infamous ‘83 “A” block and early heads, but still pre-bolt in piston oiler design. The 4 speed will beg for overdrive even if it has 3.55 gears. I do like the truck but I don’t think it’s worth the asking price.

Thank you. I know nothing, zip, zilch about ford diesels. It does say OBO. so....anyone care to throw out a reasonable value on it? Interior isnt my favorite. Would need to be turned red for sure.

Prices are going to vary wildly by region, but I would put that truck more in the $3500-$4500 category at best. He says lots of upgrades but does not elaborate. If he means the abomination of a steering wheel then I just hope he kept the old one...

He says 3 owners and 145K miles which is plausible. Those engines will run 500K if cared for, but the injection pump and injectors are only good for 100-150K and may be due for replacement. Parts store replacements are garbage. Even if he says they have been replaced that may not necessarily be a favor. Budget around $900 for new Stanadyne sticks and a pump rebuilt by a reputable diesel shop (such as those available from R&D). Most of the bad mouthing of IDI’s comes from people who have driven with a worn-out, out-of-time fuel system. The maintenance is higher up front but it pays off in longevity, mpg, and a nice strong running engine. Nothing runs like mechanical injection.

I don't know much about the diesels so defer to Jonathan. But I do know that he's right about the lack of OD. Big Blue has essentially the same transmission and 3.55 gears and it turns 2500 RPM at 65 MPH. That's too much for a 460, and even worse for the diesel.

My guess is $5500 tops for a 2wd, and that's because it is in the salty region where everything else is rusty. Down here more like what Jonathan said of $4500.

That’s what I used to think... then I learned IDI diesels and how incredibly simple they are... now I find gas engines more intimidating and beyond my understanding. I wouldn’t rule them out just because they are unfamiliar.

Ok. I will keep them in mind, thanks.

That's where I was born! Kokomo, Indiana.

I agree, I had an 88 with the 7.3. Some people complain about how they start. Glow plugs are easy to check and change.

I ended up going through all the wiring and components for the glow plug system and replacing or repairing as necessary and she started good!

Great color combo and looks clean, but yeah that's high for a 2wd.

If that was 4wd I'd be calling the guy now.
