LARIAT 85
I would like to replace my heater hoses, due to a small crack that is seeping a tiny amount of coolant. I noticed that Ford crossed the heater hoses before they connected to the heater core. Does anyone know why? I routed mine parallel, and didn't seem to have a problem? http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/heater-hoses.html
Rembrant
Well, there'd be no hydraulic difference with the lines crossed (or not crossed). I'm guessing there's no reason for it.

I am guessing the order had something to do with ease and speed while coming down the assembly line.
Steve83
Look closer... They're crossed twice. The lower hose crosses the 18663 nipple. But it doesn't matter, and it's actually better for the heater core to reverse them every few years. This truck DIDN'T get that treatment, until yesterday: https://supermotors.net/getfile/1142745/thumbnail/coolantneglect.jpg
Rembrant
I happened to come across this diagram in the '84 FSM today, and it shows the hose orientation at the heater core as "Optional".

Good find, Cory! Mind if I use that on the Cooling System/Heater Hose page?
Rembrant
Good find, Cory! Mind if I use that on the Cooling System/Heater Hose page? No problem here Gary, it's just a snip from the 1984 manual. There's one for the 300 as well. I didn't think that the routing mattered much, but I remember wondering about it myself when putting my engine back in, and I've seen others ask as well.
