So, I'm finishing up replacing a broken ignition actuator. I'm having difficulty putting it back together. Specifically, the part where you get the oval end of this toothed bit to mate with the small projection on the inside of the actuator. It seems like most videos on the topic end when the actuator is replaced, and the creator says that now you just do the reverse to put everything back together.

Instead of connecting, the ignition actuator ends up getting pushed in.

TIA.

I know it's frustrating, but it is fiddly. and sometimes you get it perfect after trying a dozen or more times and don't know why. it's a thing!

Ain't that the truth.  I"ve been in there a couple times now on my truck, and I question my luck, myself, and reality everytime that thing is hanging by a thread in the right position as I attempt to put it all back together.  It takes several tries of it falling out in my experience.  As Mat said, it's a thing!

Have any of you tried taking that piece out, sitting in position with the actuator, and then sliding the collar over it? Or should I not waste my time doing that?

it has been about three years since i di the last tilt column. but I do remember pulling the collar off. the sequence is a little fuzzy in my memory

Same here. Don’t remember all that well but I think the collar/housing that has the key must slide in/out to successfully install it.

This is correct, you have to slide the collar over while the actuator is in the right position.  (At least from what I remember as well)

It seems like everything that can go wrong with this project has done so (or will do so).

I'm unable to remove ignition lock cylinder, which seems necessary to remove that toothed part. I've taken out the lock cylinder multiple times in the past.

I have the key in the run position. I've pressed in the little button. It comes out less than 1/4" and then gets stuck. I've tried prying it out where I can see it behind the steering wheel and at the outside of the collar.

I'm thinking about using vice grips, but wanted to check here first.

I'm not opposed to drilling out the lock cylinder and replacing it.
