viven44 Posted November 8 Posted November 8 (edited) BB 2WD has a 4 legged buddy now - from Oregon. Bought today. To be named. Stripes? Looks to be a completely stock engine with stock intake manifold. I’ll need to check the stack of documents to see if there was a potential rebuild. 2nd owner's daughter sold it. He had it from 1989 to 2023. Regularly used from 89’-08’ and sat in a barn from 08’-15’.. and used since 15’ regularly until he couldn't anymore. They hauled it back from Oregon. Truck is completely highway ready. Planning to get it inspected tomorrow and get the title transferred. 1986 F350 4x4 T19 460 (of course, given my fleet of gas savers) 😝 Dana 60 solid axle 3.55 gearing Dual tank with Mechanical fuel pump and return lines - this simplifies a lot of stuff! 169K documented miles Mickey Thompson Baja tires with some fancy wheels. All I know is the PO spent $1000 on the wheels alone in 2000 !! Tires were another $1000 based on receipts from 02... Supposedly used 93 octane per son-in-law but the son in law also thought the engine was a 351 Cleveland. I'll need to sort this one out... Edited November 11 by viven44 1
Gary Lewis Posted November 8 Posted November 8 I like it!!! That's the holy grail, the 86 F350 with a solid axle. Ford finally realized that leaf springs and TTB's don't work, so the brought back what does work - a solid axle. 2

Probably paid over book value but the book value for a 80-86 1 ton is the same, so maybe it was OK. The gearing is 3.55 (Axle 39), so hoping the 4-speed does the job overall.
Gary Lewis Posted November 8 Posted November 8 I think you'll find that you'll reach for the shifter and realize there's not another gear. But it'll work. Still, using three gears (two really as you won't use 1st very often) to get from 0 to 30 and then only using one from 30 to 75 or however fast you drive seems ... wrong. 1
Nothing Special Posted November 8 Posted November 8 I had an '85 with an NP435 (similar ratios to the T19) and 3.55 axles with a 2bbl 351. That worked out pretty well. With the 3.55 gears and 32" tires it wasn't at all bad on the freeway. The 351 struggled just a little to start in 2nd gear, but it was very tolerable. A bit of clutch slipping if you were in a hurry and 1st gear with any load, but tolerable. The torque of the 460 should make that even better. The gear spacing was a little large, particularly between 2nd and 3rd as I recall, and I did dream of putting a 5 speed in it. But I still enjoyed that truck the entire 13 years and 181,000 miles I owned it. 1
viven44 Posted November 9 Author Posted November 9 (edited) I think I'll be closer to 2800 RPM trying to go 70mph, which does seem high. 5 speeds would be nice... I generally get up there fairly quickly into 4th gear (25+) and just lug it. It is nice having it back for in-town driving after I sold Big Red. If I hadn't seen the VIN tag, I would have thought it was 4.1 gears, really can't tell the difference. I do have a little grind going into reverse but if I shift slow it is OK. I do seem to recall Big Red doing the same thing. Maybe a T19 thing (no synchro in reverse?). I got safety inspection done today, and it actually passed without me doing virtually anything.. that’s a first.. 'My guy' actually decided to do his job and go through the checklist. Maybe he got audited 🤣 About the 5 speed swap, I've seen a little bit about ZF5 cases not being as strong as the T19 and needing extra care to get it installed right... I'll need to look into that some more. Edited November 9 by viven44
viven44 Posted November 9 Author Posted November 9 (edited) I do need to understand why the recommendation for 93 octane was made... not sure why a stock 460 couldn't run 87 octane like my other trucks... Engine doesn't seem to have anything special going on.. carb is jetted rich .. wonder if PO was really trying to avoid pinging Edited November 9 by viven44
salans7 Posted November 9 Posted November 9 That's essentially the truck I'm modeling my F350 after (1 ton 4x4 Monobeam, 460/T19). Great find and thanks for sharing it with us! 1
viven44 Posted November 10 Author Posted November 10 (edited) Took the truck on the highway this morning. Got up to 75mph quite easily, but 65mph would be a comfortable cruising speed. Too bad I had no idea what the tachometer said. I’ll need to fix that soon. Hmm… I have only 3 tach clusters to choose from 🤔😉 Edited November 10 by viven44 1
viven44 Posted November 10 Author Posted November 10 (edited) Also went through some of the paperwork in the truck. The daughter said he had a LOT of documentation at the house that she got rid of... Based on the bits and pieces in the truck, I've uncovered the following history and habits - Rolled over in '93 - Rolled over in '98 - Current odometer ~69,720 - Based on mileage and oil change lots, the engine oil was changed every 2K to 3K miles by PO. He took the truck for all other maintenance including battery replacement to shops. Drivetrain oils changed a couple of times. They look clean. - Engine underwent overhaul in 2015 at Gray's Automotive Shop. Based on odometer records, less than 2000 miles driven after overhaul. The only thing done was an oil change after 300 miles using Gibbs racing oil. There is a quart of this still left in the storage inside. Expensive Oil !!! - Brakes done in 2020 - The intake manifold looks stock, no blow-by or smoking. Not sure what was done to the 460. If that shop still remembers that would be helpful.
