Rockhauler
10/4, Paul, is this the right gasket? CJ CJ sorry can't confirm if thats the correct gasket for your engine. Last time I dropped a 4.9 oil pan was about 20 years ago for my brother who did exactly what I warned you about in my earlier post. Matt covered what I was trying to say with much better detail as to why the gasket can slip out of place.
Rembrant
I used a 1pc gasket on the 300 I put together a few years ago. I think I just ordered one for a newer 300.
C.Jett
Mat, specs being 1 psi per 100 rpm, being 83 yo, it will probably outlast me. So I am going the cheap—er route and replace oil pump. The only work I’ve done between hurricanes is clean up and I have another one coming at me. Someone who has used the 1 piece oil pan gasket please give a part #. 85 4.9 l Thanks CJ
mat in tn
"if" we were talking about oil supply alone I might agree as long as oil pressure is withing spec. but my experience has been that the bearings wear far more than pumps. adding a high-volume pump will help but it cannot compensate for excessive tolerance. i just pulled apart a 4.9 last week and dropped the block, head and crank off at the machine shop. two things on that specific unit were the worn-out bearings, well into copper, grooved crank and the resultant damage due to loss of oil pressure, galled pistons. I really like the 4.9 and they have a well earned good reputation but neglect can ruin any.
