BigBrother-84
Hi gentelmen! Planning to change the tranny shifter rubber boot. I am wondering how to pull off the knob... I assumed it was screwed on top of the shifter stick, but probably not. Is the shifter end made like this? This would mean that the knob has to be pulled up. Any advice about the good method to use, to not break anything? Heating it? Thanks!
JimJam300
I'm probably wrong but I thought there was a certain year cutoff where they went splined? My 82 has threaded shift knobs and the 85 transmission I snagged is splined... I torched mine and it came off easily, I'm sure if I wanted to keep it I could've heated the shifter stalk slower and kept pulling pressure on the shift knob until it gave way. The rest are splined. Your 84 will have splines.

Found in YouTube, a 10th-Generation pickup. I suppose my 84 shifter is similar? Before hammering it, I'll probably heat the shifter a bit... Ford F834
This is what I was going to suggest. Worked well for me. What about putting the knob back on? Is it press fit or is adhesive required (especially if placing a used knob?)

Gary Lewis
I've used RTV successfully. Thank you Gary, was that with a used knob or a new one? Used. I made sure it went back down where it had been so new new splines were cut.
