  1. Ok that was my question, sorry I was not more specific. I know in PC cooling, copper is always the better option. It has a much higher heat capacity than aluminum and transfers more efficiently too but is much more expensive. I didn't know how the brass core/lead solder would affect transfer. Thanks!
  2. Jim, safety should always be a top concern man no worries at all. Also, another question for you much more experienced guys here. If I could theoretically lay hands on a NOS copper/brass core w/AC option radiator, would that be better than the modern spectra ones?
  3. Gary, no tach yet. And I couldn't guess. But probably half what it was before the carb rebuild and everything? Maybe even less. Jim, hose clamps with the next trip to the auto store. Just didn't think to grab any. You can't see in the video but on the fuel filter is an impromptu copper clamp made out of a piece of electrical wire.
  4. I think my issue was a gummed up throttle cable and one of the mounting nuts on the carb. Sounds pretty good to me now.
  5. Guys, you're way over my head on this one lol but I'm learning the terms and deciphering. Lots to learn.... Finished my first carb rebuild not for a motorcycle earlier. Truck fires right up without fiddling now the carb was full of crud and all the internals got dried out. Before it ran but now no pumping the pedal and trying 3 times to start. Idle still seems super high though. I need to find a good video or write up on tuning these carbs, which is something I can probably find by searching here. I've also gotten the door locks switched, damn those are tight to get in! New plug wires are in as well.
  6. Exactly Jim, and my budget and prep for this project was 0. I offered him $1000 for the truck last summer when I was ready for one. He didn't want to sell. Was moving and realized he still couldn't start this truck to move it. Called me and said if Id tow it it was mine. given I have free towing coverage the price was right lol Also, can anyone confirm if this gasket will work for me? https://www.summitracing.com/ga/parts/fel-os34601r/applications I see in the reviews it was used on an 83, but the compatibility says 88+
  7. I think I posted this, the hardest part of adding AC to your truck will be mounting the compressor on the six. With either parts from a factory AC truck and cutting & filling holes to mount the box to the firewall and dash with vents or after market box you still need a compressor mounted to the motor. I would say either way you go start looking for compressor mounts so you have them when the time comes. Dave ---- I think you're right Dave, thanks for all your advice so far and I'll add it to the list. Just need to get the column, carb, distributor, radiator, tires and clutch fixed. Then I'll be right on to adding stuff. and it gets a whole different kinda hot down here compared to KY where I'm from so AC is a big want.
  8. got it Gary, and I have the heater only style. so if I want AC I get to go aftermarket or put a whole new dash and then all the AC components in the engine bay and cut out the firewall. Jim, your help has been invaluable here. part added to the list. Thanks again!
  9. If that broken part in the column is aluminum then it is the original 3spd shift collar, and will likely be very hard to find. Just an FYI...a truck with a factory floor shift will have a plastic spacer ring where that aluminum piece is, so if you see one of those it should also work as a filler piece. The lower plastic section was the same on all of them. The columns are not bad to work on...the non-tilt ones at least. Now...finding a Flareside bed...that's a whole different story! It is aluminium, but thankfully the guy here has a whole column for me for $80. Non-tilt, floor shift original in working order. Gonna grab that this weekend.
  10. she is a bare bones stripper no real options. and this is interesting guys. cool little bits of history to know for sure!
  11. Another question Gary, what do you mean by high/low vent system? Like Defrost, High, and Low vents? or Defrost and foot/heat vents. Sorry, just not familiar and google doesn't seem to turn anything up. Rembrandt, if I can avoid it I'm going to keep the column and just swap that collar out, but if not, I will give it away to another member before I chuck it. I'm finding out how hard the parts are to find for these old things. If anyone knows where I can find a flareside bed for my truck.... LOL
  12. thankfully it doesn't seem like he was that smart lol but the good news is I found the shroud for $40 on ebay. so adding that to the list for friday. Another question for you gurus, what's the best way to repair the sliding back glass latch, just new windows or can I get a repair kit?
  13. Yes sir, your truck is a factory 3spd model. It was a 3-on-the-tree column shift and somebody converted it to a floor shifter at some point in it's life. Factory 195/75/15 tires too...tiny...and a 2.47 rear diff, and manual brakes, yes? This thing would have needed a 2.47 rear diff with 195 tires or it would have been a screamer on the highway. ha, cool to know someone else was already modifying it. Where in the code does it show shift type? I missed that in the breakdown or didn't go far enough.
  14. Pictures of damage to the column. Found a guy who parts 80s f series trucks out here in Atlanta. Gonna see what all he has available, and if not successful I'll take a gamble on that part I found on eBay.
  15. Also, would the column be available out of your parts truck, and or the tach if it has one?
