  1. Good information. I do have an appointment with an old school mechanic tomorrow to check it out to see if he sees anything else as well. But I really like learning more and knowing. This has been a frustrating experience, since I thought I knew enough to get the car running properly again. I still don't know exactly what made it right again. I suspect it was the wire from coil to points. It was in terrible condition.
  2. I replaced the vacuum advance module because it wasn't holding vacuum. I'm not sure it's working too much and there isn't a lot of rotation in the mechanical plate when I move it manually. Not like what is shown in videos. What am I looking for when I check? I know the timing should change as the engine revs. It does some, but not a lot. It's not advancing 20-25 degrees, like going from 10 at idle to 35 at higher rpm.
  3. I still have the 81 F150 and it seems to be as reliable as an anvil and nothing much to do to it. The bird is not bad, but trying to get it betterer. Yes still has points and condenser. I did mark the damper, but it's been painted and I'm not sure the marks I found are the correct marks. Afraid I'll lose them if I try to sand on them. So I've marked it and checked it relative to vacuum. And I don't trust my Harbor Freight timing light. I am getting 20" vacuum at idle in Drive and 22(?!) in Park.
  4. This is the best dang forum there is for Ford trucks. My issue is a Ford car and I need some of you guys' expert input. 65 Thunderbird 390, 4 bbl. Had some issues, but have it running again. Running good, more acceleration than before, BUT at 35-45 at neutral throttle, there is a random miss that has come up. Recent maintenance includes new cap, rotor, wire from coil to distributor, new vac advance, fuel filter, oil change, set idle screws on carb back to 1.5 turns out. Timing adjusted by ear and vac gauge mostly, as the balance has been painted and hard to read the numbers on it. This whole ordeal started a few weeks ago when car began running rough at all conditions. Found loose distributor. I had not messed with it since buying back in Feb. Car had been running better and better. 1400 miles trouble free. So not sure what to do about this miss. Any input? Thanks for answering a non bullnose question. Or telling me I can't do this. 😄
  5. Nothing in the cab now. Plain steering wheel with wood trim, but that's all. No extra control boxes. I just want to get rid of all the extra junk. Someone installed a 1 wire electronic distributor, so the DS box isn't needed either. It may not work?
  6. I thought I posted this earlier and it may show up as duplicate. I'm trying to clean up the engine bay. The DS box is unplugged completely. There is (was) a cruise module in there and a blue box. See photos. What is the blue box? I had truck running as I cut wires so if it quit, is kinda know the last thing I cut. Lot of wires going nowhere, ending in plugs or cut wires. See photos and any imaginations would be great I think this was a cruise thing And the wires from it
  7. Went today. This is as solid a truck as you could ask for. Floors, bed, body, fenders, all solid. Engine runs good. Power windows not working. Engine strong, cruise works. AC compressor is gone but rest of system in place. Seller ended up wanting $2800 and I was ok with that. I was better at 2600. The deal with my son was to be we'd buy it, but he would have to pay the extra over $2000, plus the majority of whatever we did to it. This would make him have some responsibility and thought into what he did to it. He could work this off, as he helps me when I have jobs. He studied on this and decided he wasn't ready to jump just yet, with no real job. He's only 15 till September. And he is a student athlete, which would not allow for a "real" job. And that he wasn't 100% sure he wanted a truck. His mom has a 2003 Pontiac grand Prix that she bought new and his 2 older siblings have also driven. I respect his decision to not take the truck if he wasn't ready to accept the responsibility. So we did not buy the truck. My next harebrained scheme is a 65 thunderbird on FB market place that is supposed to be complete and just needs assembly. And paint. This will be for wife and me if we get it. Will be looking at it next week. So that's the story.
  8. Ya know, I didn't really look. He told me 133k. From the condition, it was believable. I'll probably call him this evening. I have an appointment this evening with the mechanic that was working on it and I'll going to ask him what he thinks of the truck. If he says it's ok, I'll call and go look at it more in depth
  9. Check this. All four fenders look like this. I haven't crawled under it yet. All four wheels have the rings and the centers are in the bed. Interior is pretty good. Passenger seat has a 4" split and cloth coming off the door panel, but could be re glued. And it was running nicely. More to come when I check it out. t
  10. Hey guys, Been looking for a truck for my son. He likes my truck and had helped me do a lot. So a project would be nice. Ran across a guy with an 89 F150 XLT Lariat today. 302, auto, 133k miles. Body is solid. Not rusted out at all that I saw from first look. Interior is pretty good, couple small spots. I know it's not a bull, but there aren't any around here for sale that I can find. Anything I should look at/for on further inspection? Price isn't bad and would be a good starter truck for the boy. And close enough to the bull for me to be able to help him with. Thanks
  11. I don't think it is. We worked a deal and the carpet is in my truck now. FWIW, the super cab carpet works pretty durn good in a regular cab. The extra length ran up the back wall to the window trim. Trim holds it in place.
  12. I really would have a tough time choosing if I had 8" wide steel wheels. I really like the rings and caps.
  13. 5.5" steelies with rusty trim rings and stainless dog dishes.
  14. Check it out! Had the new wheels swapped to the old tires. The Steelies were 5.5" wide, the aluminums are 7.5". This makes the tires look wider and the track is as well. One of the steel wheels was bent a little or something. The shudder that I felt occasionally is gone. Truck drives differently for sure.
  15. Chasingsscars.com. The last one this year is in Nov here. It's usually smaller that the one associated with our Autumn Leaves Festival though.
