I remember them. My mother's family took a road trip to Oregon from Okiehoma and one of the cars one in the window. I don't know if it really worked as I didn't get to ride in it.

But my cousins said it worked. It is basically a swamp cooler with the force of the air from the vehicle's forward motion doing the work.

I've seen them at car shows on old air cooled VW's.
