The Writings Of Daniel Stern: The History Of Emissions Control, Mercury Pickups, etc

Y'all may recognize Daniel Stern as the lighting guru that I frequently quote.  But I've discovered that he's far more that "just" a lighting guru.

We've been emailing quite a bit and I recently said something about the government having mandated EGR & catalytic converters, to which he said:

The US never mandated EGR. Neither were catalytic converters (https://www.curbsideclassic.com/automotive-histories/curbside-tech-who-put-the-cat-out-the-dawn-of-the-catalytic-converter/ if I may honk my own horn) ever mandated. What was mandated was that new cars not put out more than [amount per mile] of [pollutant]. Automakers were left to their own devices to meet those requirements. Canada's emissions requirements were frozen at more or less US 1975ish levels until they were aligned with the US regs for 1988.

So I read what he'd written and read the info in the links contained within and thoroughly enjoyed it - and I think you will as well.

And I told him that I liked it and he sent more links, which were also of interest to me and will be to you:

And then he sent me a link to his COAL series: Cars Of A Lifetime.  I'll admit I've not yet read any of them, but have spotted the two on the 1965 Valiant, and having owned one of those I know they are a must-read.  And maybe there will be something in there for y'all as well.

Enjoy!

Somehow I knew that you would appreciate one another (the shared engineering mindset) when I first pointed you his way in a discussion about lighting.

It's a crappy day here in Connecticut so I tucked into these links.
So far I have enjoyed Daniel's musings on gasket shellac, Mercury pickups, childhood disasters, life, and the business of NOS slant six parts and relating to his synaesthesia as only an autist could do...

He is a far sight younger than I pictured him, but that just goes to show how geeks can fixate on details and completely miss the bigger picture.

Thank you for sharing this, Gary!
I'm sure to delve deeper in the near future.

Yes, Daniel and I've hit it off.  Some of our email chains are quite long, and we've digressed far, far from whatever the subject was originally.

I hope to get to some of these links tomorrow, although I'm not sure that'll happen.  Shopping may be on the agenda here in Palm Beach Gardens.

Since I now have a Mercury pickup, I had to read that one first! Cool. To be honest I had never really paid much attention to them, until I bought one. They are fairly common around here. If you were to go out to one of the local cruise-ins or weekend car show, you'd be sure to see one or two. I'd say that Ford and Mercury pickups are almost equally represented here at car shows...at least for the years the Merc' pickups existed, from 1947-ish until 1968.

We had a bunch of Canadian only car/truck models (names, really) and I didn't realize that they were Canadian only until not all that long ago. The Beaumont is another common one...I see these things at car shows all the time, but they're basically a Chevelle. We also had an Acadian (Chevy II), and the Pontiac Catalina model in the US was called the Laurentian in Canada.

I'd sent Daniel a link to this thread and apparently he's following along.  Here's his latest comment:

And in case any readers get the idea I'm some kind of a rabid Ford-hater:
https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/cc-outtake/1977-79-lincoln-town-car-the-lincoln-sleeps-tonight/

I laughed at the "baleen" comment.  He does have a way with words.
