It's definitely something to check (valve closing against the damper marks)

The symptoms are all too familiar!
 Jim,
Lil'Red is a '87 F250 HD, 4.10's, 1356 4x4, Zf-5, 3G, PMGR, Saginaw PS, desmogged with a Holley 80508 and Performer intake.
Too much other stuff to mention.

I doubt it is a skip issue, but it does seem dist related. checking that the dist is turning with the crank is worth the minute it would take.

I'd try backing it up too. Though a gear train won't act the same as a sloppy chain.
