Thermactor, Smog Pump, Air Pump

kristopherdb
It seems my air pump is frozen solid from being disconnected for 20 years. I need it to pass emissions of course. I saw a turning one on a F250 but wasn't sure if they are cross compatible or not?  I would assume as its mechanical air is air and as long as its close it will work? I was going to pick up a refurb one off amazon but of course the one I have if i have to replace identical is twice the cost. Just trying to see if the hive has any ideas?

As far as I can tell I currently have a 32-290 Smog pump

The only way to determine your pump's part # is to get the calibration code for your engine, which was originally on a sticker on the valve cover.  It looks like 9-76C-R12, although that's for a 1989.  With that I can look up what pump you should have.  And, there was something like 35 different pumps, as shown below, although none of them are a "32-290".  (Where did you get that number?)

But, I'm going to guess that a pump from another truck of this era would work.  That's purely a guess, but it might be worth a try.

I've 'adapted' A.I.R. pumps before, for the same reason you mentioned.

Brackets, pulley flanges, shaft offset (stickout) and outlet elbows differ.
WAY easier to just get the right one.

Thankfully I don't have to go through that any more

Nor do I. And, by the way, I discovered today that there was a 460 with only one "smoke grinder", as Bill likes to say. I thought they all had two, but apparently not.

I think up through 84 or maybe mid 84 when the exhaust changed they had one, so 1983-84 would have one, 1985-87 got the booby prize, dual smoke grinders, 1988-97 they went back to one, but 1988-92 it only fed the catalytic converter and since Darth never had one (sticker reads NON-CATALYST) I don't need one.

Well, since your current one is a 32-290, I would say it was probably a replacement at one time.

I liken these trucks to onions - you keep peeling off the layers of problems and crying. Hope you like onion rings.
