Power Steering Upgrades

This post was updated on .
So... I know about Saginaw pumps and what Cardone had available with NAPA and other outlets over a decade ago.

I feel like the stock ford pump might not be enough for my 4x4 F350 dually. It seems to be sort of week at low RPMs.

What is available for upgrades to a 460 v belt setup?

I've heard about the econoline brackets, but never seen pictures of them.

I took some pictures of the bracket I have currently. I believe I have the last of the steel brackets as they all went to cast aluminum afterwards.

Actually, the bracket itself might be cast the more I look at the pictures.

I'll have to take it off at some point and take a look.

Re: Power Steering Upgrades

This bracket keeps coming up in my searches.

It looks like it might fit and appears to have mounting holes for two styles of pumps?

Maybe a saginaw vs the Ford style pump?

Just spit balling here... It definitely is priced right.

I wasn't aware of this steel bracket...that is interesting, although I didn't know there was anything wrong with the old cast aluminum bracket (which is what you have by the way). Ford used that same bracket on a kazillion vehicles...lol.

Anyway, have a look at this pump from Lee...it is a Ford C2 pump with Saginaw internals.

One thing to note is that this pump has a metric fitting, so to install one of these in a Bullnose, you'd have to buy a 90's power steering line. They're exactly the same as the Bullnose lines except the fitting on the pump end is metric. It's not a big deal...the steering boxes were all the same anyway.

Since mine is technically a brick nose, I wouldn't be shocked if it had the metric fitting already.

Yes I agree my bracket is cast. I'll look at the link you provided.

Lee is saying that pump isn't to be used on large vehicles, above a 1500 size vehicle. (I assume they mean half ton....) My F350 is a little larger than that.

Hmm I just wonder.

Ya, I'm not sure why that is, unless it's just about the hydroboost brakes? I'm not sure. Wouldn't hurt to ask.

If you have a Bricknose maybe you have the metric fitting already. I'm not sure what year they switched from standard to Metric.

I sent Lee and email yesterday.

I'll let the group know what they say.

$250 is pricey for a pump, but it may be worth it especially if it can be rebuilt again with Saginaw internals.

I did this Saginaw conversion on my truck. Parts came off an 83 Ford Econoline van with 351 Windsor. I got the brackets, hoses, and old pump. Used the old pump as a core for a reman'd unit at AZ. Have about $100 invested in the mod and I really like it. No more growling with wheel turn. The brackets are the hardest parts to find and I had to go with a different line which prompted much research and help from my friends at the local AZ.

I read about that CII converted pump with Saginaw internals after I made the conversion. Had I known about it, I would likely have gone that route. Only thing is, I don't know that I like that CII plastic case.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do?

Re: Power Steering Upgrades

I heard back from Lee, said the pump would be fine for my application.

It's pricey, but I think the best option.

Will the shaft they describe (1&1/16") for my double press on pulley?

Won't do it right off, but have a plan.
