Part Number Assistance

fords4life
Hoping one of you can help.  I’m sure they are around here somewhere, but I’m not having any luck.  I’m looking for the accelerator cable for my 1986 5.0 EFI and was trying to see if there was a part number for the fuel injector harness.

The throttle cable will be:

85/ F-U150/250 - - AOD 8 302,351 EFI E5TZ 9A758-A 40" long

But on the fuel injector harness, I can't find anything.  Does yours have a label of any kind on it?  If so I might be able to cross reference that ID # to a part #, but other than that I can't find electrical harnesses.  Sorry.

I'll look when I'm at work tomorrow. Injector loom should be either a 9D930 or 12A581...

Well done!

12A581 is "WIRE ASSY. (ENGINE CONTROL SENSOR)".

But 9D930 is "WIRE ASSY. (FUEL CHARGE)" and that's probably the one.  Here's what the catalog shows for that.  But it appears that the catalog doesn't list the 302 correctly in '86 as I believe all '86 302's were EFI.  So I'd say the part # is E6TZ 9D930-C  and it will be marked E6TB-AA.

Good point. On the early EFI trucks, the injector loom is indeed separate from the rest of the engine loom. Therefore, the injector loom would be a 9D930. All north american 302s were EFI from '85 on, 351s and 460s got EFI in 1988.

The 1985 Dealer Fact Book says "5.0L EFI V-8 (late availability)".  And the other literature shows that there were both 2V and EFI 302's in '85.

Thank you both!   It looks like the throttle cable part number was also superseded multiple times ending at E9TZ9A758U which will be much easier and less expensive to find.

Nope - all '85 302s were injected. Keep in mind that the old fact books were sent to print about 6 months before production. Lots of changes happened by the time production began.

I'm going to have to disagree.  I know I wasn't "there", but I just checked only three documents and all three agree that there were 2bbl-equipped 302's in 1985.  I know there are errors in the literature, but when all three of the ones I checked agree, it seems pretty conclusive to me.

First, the page I quoted from previously is the 1985 Dealer Facts Book and it says that the EFI is being added as an option.

Next is the 1985 brochure, and both the August of '84 and the January of '85 versions have this statement that the EFI is optional:

And third is the Master Parts Catalog itself, which was last published in 1994.  And this snippet from the MODEL APPLICATION TO PARTS LIST CROSS REFERENCE CHART shows both a 2bbl and an EFI 5.0L for 1985.

I thought Vinny mentioned a while back that the early '85 302's were still carbed, and that the full switch to EFI didn't actually take place until around February of 1985. I thought he said that most 302 trucks with a build date of 02/85 and later were EFI, and before that were mostly carbed. It might have been January, but I'm not sure now.

Since production probably started in August, January or February for the introduction would fit with "late availability".

Haven't heard from Vinny/vjsimone in a while.  He rode his bike here to the show a year and a half ago, and has checked in a few times since, but not often.  Wonder how he's doing?

I haven't seen him around much. I've seen him pop up on FTE occasionally if somebody needs help with a 302 EFI, but he seems to be quiet otherwise.

Good to know on the harness.

Cory, I sent Cousin Vinny an email asking how he is and if he'd join the fray.

I assume he is down south this time of year, but if by chance he is in Newfoundland still, I can tell you that they're still digging out from a snow storm they had a couple weeks ago. They got absolutely pounded...3 full feet plus in under 24 hours...the whole peninsula was in a state of emergency for a solid week.

Good info being shared here.  So far, I have found one place to get a new aftermarket harness that copies the original setup and that is through Ron Francis wiring.  1986 EFI Harness.  What's interesting is that they show a harness for an '85 as well that is $100 less, but they use the same photo and list the same connections so I'm not sure what the difference is.  1985 EFI Harness.  Looking at their catalog just now, they only list the '85 version in their catalog, but I don't think there should be any difference.  The catalog lists it for $129.  Still considering ordering the connectors and fabricating the harness myself.  Injector connectors are around $40 for the 8 of them from Painless, just need to get my hands on the harness again so I can confirm the O2 sensor and connection to the main harness.

One of the things that you need to be aware of is that there are two different harnesses. One for California smog and the 49 state harness.

If you have a 49 state, read that as federal smog, you will have a two wire O2 sensor. One wire is to heat the sensor and the other is the return to the ECU that reads the millivolts to lean out the injection as the engine warms up.

The one for California has a one wire sensor, no heat circuit.

Find out which one you have so you get the correct harness. As Gary would say. See if you can find the engine calibration number and use it to find out what 02 sensor it needs. My 86 Bronco has a calibration number of 654S-R00 it goes to page 500 and shows California smog and the 02 sensor part number is E63Z-9F472-A and that number crosses to a Bosch single wire 02 sensor
Interesting note for sure.  That is one area I hadn't run into any issues with incorrect info yet and wasn't aware of the difference.  My Calibration parts list is 492 and that has matched all of the other emissions stuff so far.  It does reference a one wire 02 sensor which is what I have, but the truck should be a 49 State truck as it was originally sold here in Colorado.  I have the original shipping tag and invoice that was in the glovebox still.  Hmmm...
