Little Blue 82

Ray Cecil
Good news. Just got word the seller of that blue 82 flareside has accepted my offer.

Since Gary has Big Blue, I thought Id build Little Blue 82. Corey and I will have much to talj about over the next couple years as Little Blue 82 gets remade. Im excited.

Now....all stock? I have a 4.8 Liter LS motor sitting here ready for a swap and turbo! Nah, I will keep it stock for now. I am excited to play with a straight six for awhile.

Little Levi will be happy once I tell him we are bringing it home. I have a feeling he will be involved in this project ALOT.

Wish me luck with the retrieval from Georgetown Indiana. Its just across the river.

I'm a pro at eye drops as I'm currently doing 8/day for Janey.  And I'd gladly do yours, Ray, as long as they come from that little island in the Gulf.

I figured mentioning a chevy in a ford would get a few feathers riled up. Hahaha...and Jonathan, Thanks for the eye drop tip, I will try that on my wife next time she asks me to get an eyelash out.

Dont worry guys, it will stay ford.

Im a bit worried though. After he contacted me about the truck through text, I accepted and made plans, through text. Havent heard from him since. Im sure he just got wrapped up with kids or family stuff, but it makes you wonder.

Well, I just heard from him. Ha. He texted me just a minute after the last post here about wondering why he hadnt responded. Its all good. Set to pickup tomorrow.

Levi was excited when I told him. He has already claimed it as his.

Now little Ray wants my dads truck. Guess I will be left driving the Impala. Better put the LS motor in it!

Gary, how do I add posts to a thread without hitting "reply" on a previous message. There must be a way....but it must be a secret....because I see no way of doing it.

I don't know. I just hit reply. But that post then says it is "In reply to this post", and I see other people's posts that don't say that.

Immediate plans for Little Blue 82:

Order a radiator:
or should I have the original rebuilt?

Front leveling springs:
is there enough adjustment in the eccentric busting to correct chamber after the front leveling springs are intalled?

Shifter rebuild:
Its looser than some explicit comments I wont say on Garys website. Whats it take to bring the shifter back to feeling factory again?

Drive it a little and see what it needs mechanically right away. Those are the top three immediate needs. I am sure the list will grow as I get to know Little Blue 82.

I don't know how to do that either;). I'll usually either reply to the original post, or if it's an ongoing one I'll often reply to one of my own so it doesn't look like I'm replying to another poster I'm actually not replying to...lol.

By the way...either every member of this forum had insomnia last night or there was a bug in the system that showed everybody as being online and active...

Cory, this nabble thread forum platform certainly has a few bugs. But it isnt bad. Gary, is there a way for users to contribute financially to help it keep going. I will throw a bone in.

Ray - Thanks, but it currently isn't costing enough to warrant taking up a collection.  They've hinted a couple of times that they might have to go to adverts, and at that point I'll spring for whatever it costs, within reason, to keep them off the site.

So thanks, but not at the moment.

Re: Little Blue 82

Ok Gary.

So....onto little blue.

Most pressing issues will be radiator and shifter.

I am assuming new radiators are available.

What I need help with is understanding the shifter and what to do to make it like new again. Is it just rods/linkages with bushings? Is it a matter of replacing bushings, or do I need to get inside the trans?

Yes, new radiators are available. I prefer to go that way and get an all-aluminum one. That means no plastic tank top or bottom.

Aluminum conducts better than brass and copper, so does a better job of cooling. And it is significantly lighter.

As for the tranny, I don’t remember what one is in the truck. Maybe you can update your signature?

Re: Little Blue 82

I will do that. I am not 100% sure yet what trans is in it, but sounds like a 4 speed Clark OD...according to your transmission code chart here on the site.

I did decode some of the tags. I know it should have 3.50 gears. Clark 4 Speed OD. And it was manufactured in San Jose California.

I will do a detailed write up this weekend after inspection.

Re: Little Blue 82

A good friend of mine is giving me an 89 Bronco 302 4x4. It was his mud toy. It has been rolled a few times. Ain't pretty. But has some good parts. Frame is toast, its welded to the body. But, it has 32" tires and decent wheels, as well as a brand new radiator. So, we will be going to get that soon, and I will strip it down and use what I can for spare parts for Little Blue 82. I want to take the 302 and built an engine test stand to mount it to. Not sure what trans is in it, its Auto. So I am guess E4OD or C6. I am not sure what other autos there are from Ford, for 1989.

I won't be putting an Auto in Little Blue, and for the time being, the 300 six will remain. Maybe the 302 will be an upgrade later? I don't know yet, but we will see. I need to get Little Blue 82 home first.

Re: Little Blue 82

As a CA truck it will have come with a pretty significant emissions system.  It should have EEC-III, with the computer under the driver's seat, and the brown-grommet DS-II box - or maybe even the one with a red grommet, which is rare.  With that system it is a all or nothing.  Either all of the system is there and works, or it gets its knickers in a twist and puts the timing in limp-home mode.

On the '89 Bronco, there's a minor problem with the radiator.  The core/radiator support changed in '85, so the '89 radiator won't fit in the '82 support w/o minor modification of the support.  But the mod's are described on the 85+ Radiator In Earlier Support tab here: Cooling System/Radiator Support.

As for the transmission, the Applications tab here (Driveline/Transmissions/Automatic Transmission/Automatic Transmission Applications) says that it will be a C6.  The E4OD came out in '89 but only on F250's and 350's, and then only with the engines bigger than a 302.

And if you consider "upgrading" to the 302, be sure you keep the perches off the '89.  But, in my estimation the 302 isn't much of an upgrade vs the 300.  You've dropped from a 4" stroke to a 3" stroke, which also drops the torque.  However, you could put a stroker kit in the 302 and, for a lot of money, almost have a 351.  So why not start with a 351?  It doesn't cost any more to build a 351 than a 302 and you get a 1/2" stroker kit right out of the box.

But, why not build up the 300?  Go with split exhausts and true duals.  An aftermarket intake and two carbs.  Be different!
