Keys for Doors and Ignition

Vic Roma
I cannot find the reference on the site but I vaguely recall someone clever wrote how two different truck door keys could be cut on one key blade. I tried this and it works like a charm, so thank you.

I have not inspected an ignition lock barrel to see if the pins align on one side or not but I assume they do. Does this hack also work for the ignition keys?

I think it was me that posted the "hack" on the key.

I believe the lock for the wheel is the same way, pins on 1 side only.
Get a key cut for the 2 trucks and if it did not work what are you out a few bucks?

Agreed, Dave. I am on my way to do just that.

You can do two different doors or two different ignitions, since there's only one set of pins for each cylinder.

You can't do door and ignition keys on the same blank because until OBS trucks, the oval (door) and ignition (square) keys had opposite keyways.

--_. or _--.

Or you can do as I did and get a later set of door cylinders keyed to your ignition key.

Always best to have the locksmith read the cut from the VIN, or use the unused aluminium key that came with the owner card in the glove box.

Update: yes it works, as some of you knew.

“ get a later set of door cylinders keyed to your ignition key”

Thanks, Jim. This is precisely what I wanted to do, only which model cylinders work?

I used these, from Amazon.

Standard Motor Products DL-3 Door... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C7UQAU?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I ordered an ignition cylinder at the same time (because I could remove the key with the engine running)
I have a keying set, so I changed the pins.

But you can order a set of all three, and they will come keyed alike.
