Intake Tube Replacement Options

fords4life
It still amazes me that no one makes an intake tube replacement option for these trucks.  Hoping maybe someone else has found a source, so thought I'd post up just in case before I start down the path of making something.

It looks like I'm going to have to go with silicone fittings and aluminum tubing to get something made up.

While we're here....I keep forgetting to pop the hood when I get home every night, does anyone know the OD of the throttle body inlets?

Have you looked at the 87 and up trucks for a revised air intake? Should be plentiful.

Very understandable, 1985.5-1986 5.0L inlet system is unique to those models, then 1987-93 are basically identical and the SD models through 95 are still the same, 1994-96 are partially the same, but use an MAF to a wye then dual hoses to the TB. 5.8L engines share the intake style with the 5.0L. 460s are by themselves, and a real unicorn is a factory MAF 460.

I don't know the OD of the 302 or 351's throttle bodies, but those for a 460 are 2 3/8".

As for the 460 unicorn,

Looked up the K&N intake for the later model 302 and it uses 2-3/8" couplers for the throttle body connection so I'd assume they are the same size. Went to the local junk yard this weekend and they didn't have much. I have seen some of the tubes online but don't like buying that kind of thing without being able to put my hands on it.

I also looked at prices on the silicone fittings and aluminum piping, that's probably going to have to wait too.

I would hope that you could find stuff to meet your needs in a salvage.  However, in 1996ish when Ford went to mass air flow they used a wye and merged the two hoses into one so they only had to have one MAF sensor.  So if you want to stay with the twin-hose setup you'll need to stay with the speed-density system that was used through 1995, I think.  Or, you could use the later system not hook up the MAF sensor.
