Installation of tachometer

BeagleRock
I have a chance to get a factory tach out of an 82 f-150, however I really can't afford a new pcb for the instrument cluster. Has anyone ever installed a factory tach and hard wired it to the tach and if so what connection diagram did you use? There are 4 connections on the back of the tach but I haven't a clue what is what. I have HEI dizzy also with one wire for tach.
 Thanks Randy

Randy - Check your instrument printed circuit as there were 4 different ones:

Early 1980, and I don't have the part number in front of me

E1TZ-10K843-A .. Printed Circuit Board / Marked: E1TF-10C956-AA  1981/86 F100/350 & Bronco without tach, with Oil/Amp WARNING LAMPS.

E1TZ-10K843-B .. Printed Circuit Board / Marked: E1TF-10C956-BA  1981/86 F100/350 & Bronco with tach and with Oil/Amp GAUGES.

E1TZ-10K843-C .. Printed Circuit Board / Marked: E1TF-10C956-CA  1981/86 F100/350 & Bronco without tach, with Oil/Amp GAUGES.

You haven't put what your truck is in your signature so I can't tell.  But, if it is a 1981 or later with gauges then there's a good chance that the printed circuit is the one for a tach.  Most of the trucks I've seen with gauges had the right circuit for the tach.

If not, then it is possible to hard wire the tach.  You can see how the tach is wired on Page 95 in the 1986 EVTM here: http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/fuel-tank-selector--gauges1.html.

But if you have idiot lights then there's no place to put the tach.

After you check let me know what you find.

Re: Installation of tachometer

I'm heading to page 95, it was late last night when I posted the question. I thought I put 83 F-150 w/351W with no printed circuit board. Wow 4 different tachs I wonder what the mystery is! Anyway I missed out on the bidding because I had a feeling as with many things on this particular truck, that there might be something specific to it being built in February of 83 as opposed after July of 83.
Thank you sir!
