Re: Flareside bed grounding?

Little late to the party.

I have seen it posted of this ground wire on the firewall behind the radio but I don't ever remember that ground on either of my 81 trucks when pulling them apart or putting this one together?
From what I am seeing my truck(s) being 81's may not of had one there?

On the tail light ground I wish I could add something but the wiring from the rear wheels back was a mess and only had 1.5 lights and not even stock lights at that.

Now if you have a ground wire back there for the plate light (I have a question on that) why not run that to the rear sill and being everything is bolted to it the lights would be grounded no?
Could also run a ground from the frame to the rear sill as with the spare out of the way you have lots of room and would be "covered" with the spare in place.

And I can see why you asked how it was done at the factory to see if something was missing or like was pointed out how it may have been done later.
Then you can pick how YOU want to do it and like you I don't think I would like a ground wire running next to the main light wires outside the bundle, looks tacky and un-finished.

Now that plate light question, do you have one and is it factory or after market? I and sure other will need one at some point and wonder what you are using.
Thanks

And to add to it did they also use the same plate bracket?
Good question

I don't think so. (Edit...sorry, I was answering about the brackets and you asked about the lamps. No, the lamps are not the same).

Here are the ones Reamer reproduced. I have one on my truck now that replaced the original rusted out one.

Why not

I think the flare side has been brought up once or twice and want to say they cant be had when we looked before.
I started to looking into a replacement that we could use and think I listed them in that post, I don't remember now as it has been a long time now as I did not need it then.
Think OZ needed one too.

Just was wondering what Cory had for his truck is all and maybe see a real picture of a factory light
and not from a parts book picture.

Dave,

Below is a picture from last year showing the plate bracket (Reamer's reproduction) and lamp working. I had the factory lamp...or whats left of the factory lamp...with the tabs broken off it and bandaged up with sheet metal (previous owner many years ago I'd say). I just ordered a NOS Flareside plate lamp on Ebay and should have it next week hopefully. Should be back in original-ish condition in no time!

Re: Flareside bed grounding?

Thanks for the answer.
I also have Reamer's plate bracket and when I got it that is when I started looking for it then stopped as I did not need it right then ....  squirrel

I did not know you had what was left of the factory one or that you could still find NOS ones?
What magic search word did you use to find it and was it killer $$ for it?
When you get it you have to post a picture so I know what to look for as a replacement if no more cheap NOS ones show up.

Dave,
I got it for $25 USD. I saved the picture from Ebay. It is unique to the Flareside, and it was a carry-over from a 70's model car (Granada maybe).

Maybe Ford updated the part with pigment so the plastic didn't break down from UV?

(Would explain the later D->E part #)

Actually, the 3rd digit "F" indicates that it is NOT for a Bullnose, right?...Should be a "T" for a pickup, no?

Edit: And would the "L/C Lamp" be Luggage Compartment Lamp?

T for truck, U (utility) for Bronco.

IDK what that is.
But it was said the same part on Granada. And the Granada was gone by then, right?

Maybe the lamp is convenient, and Ford already owns the tooling???
Same as having a template in CAD today..

A quick Google search brought up this page below...

https://m.roadkillcustoms.com/decode-ford-part-numbers/

According to it, "F" indicates "Foreign / Trans Am Racing".

I'll have to leave this one to the FoMoCo part number experts;).

At the end of the day, the lamp DOES look correct for the Flareside.

Nice find David. A tip of the hat to you sir.
