Did I just burn my fuel pump up?

jdavidsmi
I’m working on getting the 86 to start but was not getting fuel to the engine. And I could  not hear the pump run. So I dropped the tank and pulled the pump out, wired 12 volts to the terminals on top of the motor. It ran for a couple seconds and stopped, and now nothing.

So my question did I burn up the motor seeing if it would run?

This is on the 86 with a 5.0 automatic transmission, 2 wheel drive.

I’m trying to get this one to run so I can get it out of the garage, and pull the 84 in to replace the fuel tank. Hopefully to fix the dirty problem.

Shouldn't burn up from 12V, but running it dry can burn the actual pump up. I usually stick one in something thin like ATF that isn't as flammable as gas. There is a second pump on the frame that is the high pressure pump for the EFI system.

Did the pump in the frame under the drivers door come on when you turn the key to "run"? The reason I ask is that both pumps should have come on momentairly when the key was turned to "run" . Try it and listen to the one on the frame. If the frame pump( high pressure pump) dident come on check the, I want to say the orange fuesable link at the starter relay and make sure it is good. There is also a fuel pump relay on the inside of the left front fender by the hood henge that needs to be checked for function.

Thanks Steve, I did not remember the fuseable link was there. No I never heard either pump run ,I had the wife turn the key on while I was under the truck.

I have some def in a bucket at the farm I will stick the pump in it and try to run it again.

Make sure that you flush out the DEF when you are done testing as it will ruin the pumps and the injectors as it is hard on plastic parts
