I'm no expert on the Z-bar linkage mechanical clutch, but I think if the arm is locked into the throwout bearing and the back side is clipped over the mushroom pivot ball it should work.
I'm not sure the spec for movement of the release arm.
On a hydraulic clutch the slave only moves the arm about 3/4"

Does the fork clip into the bell housing? Or is it held in place by the dust boot?  The dust boot was in pretty bad shape she I ordered a new one that will hopefully fit.

I can only speak for my truck, but it certainly should be retained on the pivot at the rear of the bell housing.
Certainly the rubber boot isn't going to help much.

My release arm has a forked flat spring that pops it into place.
Dave seems to have a good handle on the linkages of these mechanical clutches.
Perhaps he can respond with a pic or more succinct answer.
