C6 - Front Main Seal

Hi everyone,

Looking for informed opinions here.

I just changed out the transmission sump on my C6, drained a lot of trans fluid and then added a lot of new fluid back in.

I get home after a 3-5 mile drive, and see drip, drip, drip coming from the bellhousing where the trans butts up.

After putting some cardboard underneath, it's red.

That being said, my line of thought is that it's likely a seal that has gone bad.... but usually, they go bad when something else is causing rubbing/chafing on the seal - esp. a unit that is largely immersed in oil.

What are my options here?

Build a built C6 and swap over the trans sump or just replace the seals? I'm guessing the front and rear should be done at the same time... anything else?

Is this a PITA job for a shade-tree mechanic? I don't have a trans jack or anything like that unfortunately.

The trans shifts really smooth and pulls great, but it's as old as the truck... I just want no more oil leaks on this truck - so tired of it.

Some times they leak.
You could build another C6 and do the swap, you would need to drop & install the C6.
or
Drop your C6 pull the converter out, pop the seal out and new one in doing the same for the rear one too.
Install the C6 and be on your way.

I cant see the 2 seals being more than $20 or $30 and a few qt of ATF.
What would a 2nd C6, someone to rebuild in run? I am thinking maybe $1000?
If me and the one you have now works I would drop it, change the 2 seals and enjoy.

Did it leak before? It could be getting "blown" up there while driving.

I would make sure it's not the sump gasket leaking.

How many hours to drop the trans?

Also - it had a small leak before, which is why I changed the sump as that was where it looked to be leaking at that time. The new sump gasket looks clean to me. Leak seems to be coming from the little lip at the bottom of the trans where it meets the bellhousing.

It drips when I start and run the engine with the trans in Park.

Originally, I was just going to do the gasket, but I figured since I had to dump out all the ATF - and my engine is putting out around 400 hp - I thought the larger, finned sump will help to keep things a little cooler...

Thanks Dave - I hope so.

The issue is that I need to pay a mechanic I've used for a while to do that job as I don't have the tools or work-area at home to do the job.

I guess I'll start there and see what happens.
